The Twisting Path to Sound Design

Every sound designer you meet always say that they don’t have a straightforward path to sound design, its a career someone stumbles into. One could say the same for my own career.

In my freshman year of highschool, I stumbled across “Introduction to Film” class. To me, this meant that I would be watching movies for 90 minutes a day and signed up immediately. In actuality, the class was about the process on how films are made and every step that filmmakers take from ideation to the silver screen.

This class captivated me and I spent my remaining years in high school pursuing this dream - from going to a trade school specialized in film to working as a commercial intern at a news station.

My journey led me to the Savannah College of Art and Design where I majored in Film and TV. However, one of the major requirements was Sound Design 101, a class that every aspiring filmmaker had to take, and I was lucky enough to grab a seat in my freshman year. I quickly fell in love with the medium and changed my major.

My time spent in sound design was colored by the pandemic, but I didn’t let it stop me from pursuing my dream. I moved from linear projects - such a production sound, movies and short films to animation. Animation then led me to a life long passion of mine, games. My Junior and Senior year of college were spent pursuing Game Audio opportunities, ending up on several thesis’ for game students.

After graduating, I moved to the Los Angeles area to pursue a career in Game Audio.
